The adjustments that matter

"Ergonomic" is printed on almost every chair box. What actually makes a chair comfortable for long days is whether it adjusts to fit your body:

  • Seat height: your feet should rest flat on the floor with your knees at about hip height.
  • Seat depth: you should have two to three finger-widths between the front of the seat and the backs of your knees. Adjustable seat depth matters most if you're especially tall or short.
  • Lumbar support: the curve should fit the small of your back. Adjustable lumbar is better than fixed, because everyone's curve sits at a different height.
  • Armrests: they should let your shoulders relax with elbows at about 90 degrees. Height adjustment is the minimum; armrests that also move in and out help a lot.
  • Recline and tilt lock: leaning back slightly takes pressure off your lower back. A good chair lets you lock the angle you like.

Mesh or fabric? Mesh stays cooler in warm rooms. Padded fabric feels softer at first but can get warm over long days. It's mostly personal preference.

Sihoo M56: best under $200

The M56 covers the basics at a price that's hard to beat: a breathable mesh back, built-in lumbar support, and adjustable seat height and armrests. It won't feel like a premium chair after eight hours, but it's a big step up from a dining chair or a cheap gaming chair, and it comes with a three-year warranty.

Branch Ergonomic Chair: best under $400

Branch designs chairs specifically for home offices, and this is its most popular model. It has firm, adjustable lumbar support, 3D armrests that move up, down, forward and sideways, and a lot of adjustment points for the price. It looks more like office furniture than a gaming chair, which matters if your desk is in a living space.

Watch out

The Doro C300 Pro packs in features usually found on chairs that cost twice as much, including dynamic lumbar support that adjusts as you move and armrests with a wide range of adjustment. Its price varies between about $380 and $450 depending on the retailer and sales, so it's worth checking a couple of places.

HON Ignition 2.0: best warranty for the price

HON is a long-standing office furniture maker, and the Ignition 2.0 is built to the same standards as chairs sold to businesses. Its biggest selling point is the limited lifetime warranty, which is rare at around $480. If you want a chair you won't have to replace, this is the best warranty per dollar on our list.

Steelcase Leap V2: worth the splurge

If you sit for most of the day, every day, a premium chair is one of the best investments you can make in your work. The Leap V2 is widely considered one of the best office chairs available. Its backrest flexes to follow your spine as you move, and nearly every part adjusts. At around $1,400 it's expensive, but the 12-year warranty spreads that cost over a long time.

Verdict

For long days, every day

Good
Exceptional adjustability, 12-year warranty
Watch out
High price; consider certified used or refurbished

Also worth a look

  • Branch Verve ($599): a step up from the Branch Ergonomic with a softer, more upholstered look and a seven-year warranty.
  • Herman Miller Aeron (about $1,750+): the classic mesh chair, sold in three sizes. A good choice for larger or taller people who run warm.
  • Used premium chairs: office liquidators often sell refurbished Steelcase and Herman Miller chairs for a fraction of the new price. Check whether a warranty is included.

Set it up properly

  1. Set the seat height so your feet are flat and your knees are about level with your hips.
  2. Adjust seat depth until you have a small gap behind your knees.
  3. Move the lumbar support to the curve of your lower back.
  4. Lower the armrests until your shoulders relax and your elbows bend at about 90 degrees.
  5. Raise your monitor so the top of the screen is near eye level.

Common questions

Are gaming chairs good for working?

Some are, but many prioritize looks over adjustment. A chair with adjustable lumbar support and armrests usually serves better than one with racing-style bolsters and a pillow.

How much should I spend on an office chair?

If you work at a desk full time, a chair in the $350 to $500 range is where comfort and adjustability improve the most. Go premium if you can, especially used or refurbished.

How long should a good chair last?

Look at the warranty. Budget chairs are often covered for a few years; premium chairs commonly come with 12-year warranties.
