What to check before you buy

Height range

This matters more than anything else. When you stand, the desktop should sit at about the height of your bent elbows, with your shoulders relaxed. Tall people need a high maximum, and shorter people need a low minimum so the desk also works sitting down. Most budget desks top out around 46 to 47 inches, which can be too low if you're over about 6 feet tall. If that's you, look at the E7 Pro.

One motor or two

Dual-motor desks lift more weight, move more smoothly and tend to wobble less at full height. Single-motor desks are cheaper and fine for a laptop and one monitor.

Weight capacity

Add up your monitors, computer, speakers and anything else that lives on the desk, then leave plenty of room. A desk working near its limit moves slower and wears out sooner.

Top size

A 48 × 24 inch top fits a laptop plus one monitor comfortably. Two monitors or a lot of paperwork usually need 55 to 60 inches of width.

Warranty

The frame and motors are the expensive parts to replace. Longer warranties on those are worth paying a little more for.

Huanuo Small Electric: best for small spaces

At 32 × 19 inches, this is a desk for a corner of a bedroom or a spot next to the couch, not a full workstation. It holds a laptop and a few accessories, adjusts between 28.3 and 46.5 inches, and costs less than most desk converters. If you work on a laptop and you're short on floor space, it's the cheapest way to try standing.

Verdict

For laptop-only setups in tight spaces

Good
Very cheap, tiny footprint, electric height adjustment
Watch out
Too small for a monitor setup

FlexiSpot EN1: best under $200

The EN1 is a full 48 × 24 inch electric desk with memory presets for your sitting and standing heights. It's single-motor and its height range tops out at 46.5 inches, so it suits average and shorter heights best. It goes on sale often, and at its sale price of around $110 it costs about what a decent desk converter does.

Verdict

The best way to start without overspending

Good
Full-size top, presets, frequent sales
Watch out
Single motor; may be too low for tall people

FlexiSpot Comhar: best under $400

The Comhar adds something most standing desks don't have: a built-in drawer for cables, notebooks and chargers. It has a 48 × 24 inch top and adjusts from 28.3 to 47.6 inches. If your desk is also your filing cabinet, the storage alone can save you buying a separate unit.

Verdict

For a tidy desk with built-in storage

Good
Drawer included, clean look, mid-range price
Watch out
Narrower height range than premium desks

FlexiSpot E7 Pro: best overall

The E7 Pro is where standing desks start to feel solid. Its height range of 25.8 to 51.4 inches is one of the widest here, so it works for both tall and shorter people, sitting or standing. It lists at $639.99 with a bamboo top and was on sale for about $530 in October 2026. For most people working from home full time, this is the desk we'd point to.

Verdict

The one to buy if you're at your desk all day

Good
Very wide height range, sturdy dual-motor frame
Watch out
Costs much more than budget desks

Uplift V2 Commercial: best heavy-duty

Uplift desks are built to order: you choose the frame, top size, material and accessories. The V2 Commercial frame is rated for 355 pounds and uses three-stage legs, which let it go as low as 21.6 inches before adding the desktop. That makes it one of the few desks that truly fits shorter people while seated, and it handles multiple monitors and heavy equipment easily.

Verdict

For heavy setups or shorter users

Good
High weight rating, very low minimum height, lots of options
Watch out
Premium price once configured

Autonomous SmartDesk 5 Pro: best warranty

The SmartDesk 5 Pro uses a C-shaped frame that leaves the space under the desk open, which helps with cable management and legroom. It's rated for 330 pounds, reaches 48.5 inches, and comes with a lifetime warranty on the frame, the longest coverage among the desks here.

Verdict

For buyers who want it to last

Good
Lifetime frame warranty, open legroom, strong frame
Watch out
Price varies a lot by configuration

Getting used to standing

  • Alternate, don't stand all day. Switch between sitting and standing through the day rather than standing for hours.
  • Start short. Stand for 20 to 30 minutes at a time at first and build up.
  • Raise your monitor. The top of the screen should sit near eye level. A monitor arm helps if your screen's stand is too short.
  • Get an anti-fatigue mat. A cushioned mat makes standing on hard floors much more comfortable.
  • Save presets. Store your sitting and standing heights so switching takes one button.

Common questions

Is a desk converter cheaper than a standing desk?

Not anymore. Basic electric standing desks now cost about the same as a good converter, and they give you a full desktop at both heights.

Do I need a dual-motor desk?

Only if you have heavy equipment, multiple large monitors, or you're tall and will use the desk near its maximum height, where single-motor desks wobble more.

How long does assembly take?

Most desks take about an hour with two people. Desks with drawers or built-to-order frames can take longer.
